Freedom and independence for the people of Abkhazia is the highest value gained with numerous victims, Mussa Exzekov, Chairman of the Supreme Council of the WAC, emphasized in his congratulation on the 10th anniversary of the diplomatic recognition of Abkhazia as an independent state.

He added that after a decisive victory in the Patriotic War of the people of Abkhazia, a great work was carried out, including on the international recognition of the Republic of Abkhazia as a sovereign and independent state.

«August 26, 2008 - an epoch-making date in the recent history of the Republic of Abkhazia. The Russian Federation was the first to recognize the Republic of Abkhazia, which, first of all, guaranteed the security of the people of Abkhazia. Since that moment, the Republic of Abkhazia has had an opportunity to build a better future: there is an enormous potential for the development of interstate Abkhaz-Russian relations, and Abkhazia will use it,» said Ekzekov.

He said that Russia is a great power; its diplomatic recognition is a great achievement and an important stage for the history of the Abkhaz-Abaza people. Russia was also supported by other states - Nicaragua, Venezuela, Syria, Nauru, Vanuatu and Tuvalu - who recognized Abkhazia as an independent state. Now Abkhazia is in a completely different international dimension than before August 2008.

He also added that Russia as a reliable ally of Abkhazia represents a great opportunity to unite the Abkhaz-Abaza people and the prospect of a new history of unity that we can write with our own actions.

On August 26, 2008, Russia recognized the sovereignty of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The independence of the Republic of Abkhazia was also recognized by Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru, Vanuatu and Tuvalu. In May 2018, Syria declared the recognition of the independence of the Republic.
