On the International Museum Day, on May 18, the “Night at the Museum” event was held in Sukhum.  This year, four museums opened their doors to visitors - the Abkhaz State Museum, the Dmitry Gulia Literary and Memorial Museum, the Museum of Military Glory named after the First President of Abkhazia Vladislav Ardzinba and the Museum of the History of Foreign Abkhaz named after Omar Beyguaa.

“Night at the Museum” is an international action, during which you can see the museum expositions at night.  On this night, many museums of the world are free for visitors after sunset and almost until morning.  In Abkhazia, the museums participating in the action worked until midnight.

Elvira Arsalia, the Minister of Culture and Preservation of the Historical and Cultural Heritage of Abkhazia, noted that the goal of the action is to draw people's attention to museum activities, preserve historical memory and familiarize young people with the eternal cultural values.

“Night at the Museum” helps to attract the widest audience.  The museums of Abkhazia for this day have prepared interesting expositions that are difficult to see at another time.  We are very pleased that on this day the museums are visited by so many people, in particular, children,” said Elvira Arsalia.

The action was started by the Museum of Military Glory named after Vladislav Ardzinba.  There were new expositions dedicated to the service of the rear, the service of weapons and equipment, intelligence and counterintelligence of the Armed Forces of Abkhazia.  There were also competitions for the knowledge of the history of Abkhazia, for the best performance of dances and reading poems in the Abkhaz language. The best participants of the competition were presented with books on the history of Abkhazia and souvenirs.

“It was very interesting and fascinating.  We came with children, they participated.  There were dances and songs.  The main thing is that our children saw a lot of interesting exhibits,” said Sukhum resident Madina Avidzba.

The participants of the “Night at the Museum” action were also able to visit the Dmitry Gulia Literary and Memorial Museum.  This is the house-museum of the patriarch of Abkhaz literature, especially interesting to schoolchildren.

“We studied the works and biography of Dmitry Gulia at school.  It was very interesting to visit his house.  In general, the “Night at the Museum” campaign is excellent, I used to hear about it only on TV,” said a student of one of the capital's schools, Alan Bartsy ts.

An interesting program was also prepared for the visitors of this museum: a meeting with the famous Abkhaz poet Terentiy Chania and young Abkhaz poets, a speech by students of the journalism department of the Abkhaz State University, a performance by the instrumental ensemble “Gunda”.

A student of the Dranda High School Alan Chamlar took part in a small concert program, for whom it was the first visit to the museum.

“I'm here for the first time.  I really liked it.  I sang songs about Abkhazia, about victory.  I want to come back here,” said Alan.

The Abkhaz State Museum did not stay aside from the events of the “Museum Night”.  It’s employees prepared an exhibition of works on the “Lake Ritsa” and showed materials of the Dzhantuh burial ground (the burial site of the late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age on the Dzhantuh Mountain near the Akarmara village in Tkuarchal, in the Aaldzga River Gorge - ed.). яhey also prepared an exposition on the history of Abkhazia of XIX – early XX centuries.

The “Night at the Museum” campaign in Abkhazia has been held since 2015 and is gaining popularity every year.  For the first time the action “Night at the Museum” was held in 1999 in France.  Since then, new countries have joined it annually.
