The epidemiological situation in Abkhazia in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the likelihood of changes in restrictive measures were discussed at the next meeting of the Coordination Headquarters to protect the population of Abkhazia from coronavirus infection.

The epidemiological situation on coronavirus in Abkhazia is favorable today, the Minister of Health Tamaz Tsakhnakia said at a meeting of the Coordination Headquarters to protect the population from coronavirus infection, which was held on Thursday, June 11.

This is thanks to timely measures to fight infection, the Minister said. He informed the headquarters that during the pandemic, medical equipment, including protective equipment, had been imported to Abkhazia amounting to 67 million 353 thousand 772 rubles. Delivery of medical equipment at the expense of funds raised by the Russian community of Abkhazia amounting to more than 9 million rubles is also expected in June.

“At the moment in Abkhazia there are 60 ventilators, 22 of which were acquired since March 2020.  During the pandemic period, 5900 PCR studies of the infection were obtained. 1677 studies were carried out, 1241 people were examined,” said Tamaz Tsakhnakia.

Discussing a possible change in the restrictive measures in force in the Republic, the Prime Minister of Abkhazia, Alexander Ankvab, in turn, noted that in order to ensure security and prevent the “import” of coronavirus into the country, state borders should be left closed.

“Our border should remain closed and based on this we will introduce relaxation of restrictions within the country,” said Alexander Ankvab.

He explained that if the border is opened, the number of people coming to Abkhazia will increase, which could negatively affect the epidemiological situation in the country.

After a two-hour working meeting, the Coordination HQ members decided to develop an updated Order on the situation with COVID-19, which will be submitted to the President of Abkhazia Aslan Bzhaniya in the coming days. The new document will be published on the official website of the head of state at the beginning of next week.

To date, 36 cases of coronavirus infection have been identified in Abkhazia, 27 of them recovered and one died. There are 8 patients in the Gudauta hospital. 481 people underwent a two-week observation at the Aitar Hotel in Sukhum. Today there are 16 people left.
