X International Freestyle Wrestling Tournament for prizes from the Chairman of the WAC Supreme Council started in Abkhazia.
The 10th Anniversary International Freestyle Wrestling Tournament for prizes from the Chairman of the Supreme Council of the World Abaza Congress Mussa Ekzekov opened in Novy Afon on Saturday, December 10. The competitions are timed to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the "Abaza" sports club and are held as part of events dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the World Abaza Congress and the VIII Convention of the WAC.
Chairman of the WAC Supreme Council Mussa Ekzekov, head coach of the Abkhazian freestyle wrestling team Jarnaz Benia, President of the Olympic Committee of the Republic of Abkhazia Valery Arshba and head of the sports department of the State Committee of Abkhazia for Youth and Sports Zhanna Zantaria made a speech at the opening ceremony of the tournament.
The organizers of the Tournament also included the head of the "Abaza" club Leonid Bodzhgua, the European and USSR freestyle wrestling champion Rash Khutaba and the coaches of the "Abaza" club, the honorary master of sports of Abkhazia Dzuka Benia and the master of sports of the USSR Igor Beraya.
Among the guests of the event were the ex-Minister of Internal Affairs of Abkhazia Leonid Dzyapshba, the head of the administration of Novy Afon Temur Otyrba and his deputy Beslan Kharabua.
The opening ceremony of the Tournament began with national dances and songs performed by members of the "Adats" dance group and singer Inessa Grigolia.
Mussa Ekzekov welcomed the guests of the Tournament and the athletes, whom he wished good luck in the upcoming competitions.
"Today we are opening the X International Freestyle Wrestling Tournament in our native land. I am proud of every athlete who takes part in the tournament. Together with you we are creating the history of modern Abkhazia, shaping its image on the international sports arena. Let friendship and unity win today!" Ekzekov wished.
Leonid Bodzhgua said that the International Freestyle Wrestling Tournament for the prizes of Mussa Ekzekov traditionally brings together professionals from different cities of Abkhazia and Russia and contributes to the promotion of this sport among young people.
About 130 freestyle wrestlers in three age categories take part in the competition. Within each age group, athletes are also divided into weight categories.
The first day of the tournament was very busy. According to Jarnaz Benia, all athletes showed a high level of training and professional skills, so the fight for the first places will be intense.
"Today, true professionals have gathered, including Russian and world champions. All the guys proved themselves worthy," said Benia.
The international freestyle wrestling tournament for prizes from the Chairman of the WAC Supreme Council, a public and statesman, philanthropist Mussa Ekzekov has traditionally been held in Abkhazia since 2011. During this time, hundreds of athletes from Russia and Abkhazia took part in the competition. The Anniversary X Tournament brought together about 130 wrestlers from Karachay-Cherkessia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Dagestan, Krasnodar, Sochi and all towns of Abkhazia, who compete in three age and 15 weight categories. The names of the winners will be announced after the final competition, which will be held on December 11.
