Literary evening, timed to the anniversary of the outstanding writer Fazil Iskander, was held in St. Petersburg.

A literary memorial evening dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the outstanding contemporary writer Fazil Iskander was held in St. Petersburg last weekend. The evening was organized by the youth activists of the WAC Local Branch in St. Petersburg.
Temur Rekvava, chairman of the St. Petersburg branch of the Congress, told the WAC web information portal that such an event was held in St. Petersburg for the first time.
“It is especially pleasant that the initiative to hold an evening of memory of our compatriot, beloved Fazil Iskander came from young people. For us, this is the third event and I am most of all pleased that our young people are actively participating in their organization,” he said.
Rekvava also noted that the focus of the evening was the work of Fazil Iskander.
“While we are reading, quoting, telling each other his works, the work of Fazil Abdulovich remains immortal. We seem to carry on his work, passing his word to the next generations,” he noted.
The literary evening opened with a welcoming address on behalf of the Chairman of the Supreme Council of the WAC Mussa Ekzekov.
“Fazil Iskander called himself a writer who glorified Abkhazia; it is here (in Abkhazia -ed.) where his characters live, be it the famous Sandro or the boy Chik. Here the action of all the most famous works of Fazil Abdulovich unfolds,” the address says.
Ekzekov noted that the preservation of culture and unique traditions are the issues to which Fazil Iskander paid special attention in his works. He also stressed the importance of such events.
“It is gratifying that the Abkhaz-Abaza Diaspora is gathering once again in this format in St. Petersburg. We often said that such meetings would become a good tradition. It is important to remember that Abaza and Abkhaz are one people and together we create the future of the Abkhaz-Abaza ethnos,” he said.
The head of the staff of the Supreme Council of the WAC, Kan Tania, noted that one of the main tasks of the Congress is the ethnocultural unity of the Abkhaz and Abaza.
“Today’s event clearly showed us that it is very important to meet and communicate. The evening featured not only the works of Fazil Iskander, but also folk poets from Abazashta - Mikael Chikatuev and Kerim Mkhtse. Some Abkhaz people first heard them, so such events are very important for the younger generation to first of all get to know each other and communicate,” he said.
Journalist, art historian and writer Bocha Adzhindzhal became a participant in the literary evening, according to whom the evening was held at the proper level.
“Today we celebrated the 90th anniversary of Fazil Iskander, which was held at the highest level. People enjoyed it, in general, such meetings should be held more often,” said Adzhindzhal.
As part of the evening, members of the WAC Local Branch organized a concert in which young people read poems and excerpts from the stories of Fazil Iskander, sang national Abkhaz and Abaza songs and performed folk dances.
Fazil Iskander died at the age of 88 on July 31, 2016. The passing of an outstanding writer, winner of many awards has become an irreplaceable loss for the world literary community. His works have been translated into many languages of the world, completing the golden collection of the world literary heritage.
